We hear a great deal about the ill effects of too much stress in our lives. While most experts agree that some amount of stress is beneficial, prolonged and intense periods of stress can undermine both emotional and physical well being. That is why stress management is so important if you are going to engage on a path of personal growth.
When it comes to emotions, the continual presence of a high level of stress can begin to make subtle changes that lead to making life feel less enjoyable. At first, the individual may find that hobbies and interests no longer hold much attraction. This reduces life to work and home, with maybe an occasional night out with friends. As time goes on, the idea of going out begins to become less attractive. Over time, sleep patterns are interrupted, which makes it easier for depression to settle in and make the world an even smaller place. When one lives in a small box, there is no room to explore the path of personal growth.
As for the physical damage that stress can cause, those inner thoughts and feelings can begin to manifest in several dangerous ways. At first, they simply make it harder to get up and around to exercise or even to attend public events. As the situation worsens, it becomes less of an aversion and more of a fear. Anxiety attacks may begin to appear, which sets the stage for developing agoraphobia. Before the individual knows it, he or she feels separated from family and friends, and can barely manage to get out of the house without feeling crazy or that death is about to occur.
Stress management can help to prevent this from occurring. Part of the discipline of managing stress is being able to recognize when factors have to change. This will often mean learning the difference between healthy stress and unhealthy stress, and making life changes that will support the former while eliminating as much of the latter as possible. Personal growth can be encouraged with the right amount of stress, since the stress will often be the motivation for us seeking to find answers to questions we have. But that stress must be controlled and channeled in order to be productive.
Personal growth, at its best, will prompt us to be ever reaching for the potential of our future while at the same time appreciating the here and now. Excessive worry and pressure impede this process. Learning to understand the foundations of stress, eliminate that which is not necessary, and effectively managing what remains will lead to a life that is more balanced, productive, and happy.
