The Truth About Reducing Work Stress

By Ben Sanders

If you are constantly feeling stressed in your workplace, it’s time to find the solution. Work stress is one of the most common forms of stress condition and most of us are resigned to the fate that we can’t do anything about it. But if you take some time and examine your environment, there may just be enough clues to giving yourself the edge to keep stress under control.

One of the biggest misconception of relieving stress is that there should be a drastic change in your current behavior. Many would advise “firing” your boss or say “No” to everything that comes your way. However, one of the most effective methods is to understand your own abilities. Are your stressed because you struggle to find solutions on how to do the tasks assigned or there are too many unimportant to-dos that kept you from finishing them? If it’s the latter, find some time and have a talk with your boss. Negotiations can come from a win-win perspective if you calmly explain the situation, and communicate that you want to be more productive in achieving the significant tasks.

However, when you find the tasks have you scrambling to look for solutions and you’re taking forever to finish it, maybe it’s time for you to upgrade yourself. Would learning a new skill or taking a course equip you with the knowledge to do the job better and faster? Work can never finish, so it may be also an opportunity to take a break, learn something new and be more effective when you get back.

Pointing fingers at something else is always easier. But sometimes, we have to accept responsibilities that we contribute to the stress we feel, ourselves. Not that we are not working hard enough, but have you asked yourself, are you being too perfect sometimes? Although the quality of work is important, if you spend too much time perfecting it, will the result of this time spent be more valuable than you finishing the other tasks? Maintain your standards, but do not perfect it.

We get added responsibilities when we are being assigned to managing position. Many of us hold on to those responsibilities too tightly and attempt to shoulder our team’s success by ourselves. When you are taking too much pressure, are you delegating enough to your team members? Everyone has a sense of responsibility and the intention to do well. By delegating important tasks and giving your team members the trust to accomplish them, will bring up that responsibility. Not only will you be managing better but you will build a strong team that operates effectively and efficiently.

Work stress always comes unexpectedly. But it may not necessarily be out of our control. Upgrading ourselves to be more effective in our work, or communicate often with your boss can do wonders to reducing stress in the workplace. Perfection is relative, so spend the time on other tasks rather than perfecting one. And do delegate work when possible to build the sense of responsibility and achievement within your team members.

Remember, if we empower ourselves and choose to do something about it. More often than not, the solutions are within ourselves to reduce the stress in our workplace.
