Don’t Worry Be Happy!
By Sharleen Berryman
Back in the day when I was really good at making my life an uphill struggle, I routinely worried about the build up of my clothes washing. Yes, damp towels, stinky socks, and other paraphernalia called to me from the washing basket, and caused me to stress about things I had not done. Unfortunately though, it wasn’t just those damn dirty clothes…
It was the vacuum….”you need to clean the floor!.”
The oven, “did I turn it off?”
My job…”will I get everything done in time?”
My partner….”does he love me?”
My friends…”are they mad with me?
And the list went on and on and on.
In fact…..
I used to worry, that I worried too much.
Very sad indeed.
It is always hard when life gets on top of us to a point where we procrastinate and worry about every little detail in it.
“Can I pay my bills? Does my hair look ok? Will they like me? What if I don’t get the job? Am I smart enough? Pretty enough? Am I healthy enough? Did that look mean he/she doesn’t like me? Where am I going? What am I supposed to be doing with my life…
AAAAAAAAARRRRRGGGHHHH!
Enough! I say enough is enough is enough! Just stop that right now I tell you. Are you listening?? Well I hope so, because worrying is a waste of time. Yes you heard it here - a complete waste of time. Why? I hear you ask.. Well let me tell you.
Worrying doesn’t get you anywhere. Zilch nada nowhere. It doesn’t make you look better, it doesn’t make others change their minds about you, and it doesn’t get the washing to leap out of the basket and wash itself. No it certainly does not make all your problems go away, in fact it only puts a microscope of them more, and causes warped speed thinking, and unnecessary anxiety. Take it from me, the queen of worry warts, it is just a waste of time.
So, how do you stop worrying? Well, it certainly is not easy but this is how I rearranged my thinking to avoid it.
“If I don’t do the washing right now will the world fall apart?” NO.
“If that person doesn’t like what I said, will I curl up and die? NO
“If my hair is sticking up on end at an unflattering angle will anyone care? NO.
“Will I grow up and be lonely and get hit by a bus? Probably not, and there is certainly no point in worrying about things that may or may not happen.
It is about the here and now. Right now. Not the past or the future. You can’t change the past, but you can change your attitude towards it. You can’t foretell the future, but you can create it. Its all up to you. You can choose NOT to worry. You can choose to change you attitude. And you can choose to be happy.
Ok, ok it is not always that easy, but if you want to make your life less stressful, less anxiety ridden, and more carefree, then don’t waste your time worrying. It simply does not accomplish anything. Action is what accomplishes things. Simple. Remember this. As the old saying goes, accept the things I cannot change and change the things I can. (Or something along those lines.)
Things in life always seem to work themselves out if we just “let go” of our emotional attachment to it. Placing emotional attachments to things that we do not have control of only leads to unnecessary worry. I decided a long time ago that my life was complicated enough without adding to it with worry. I was stressed unhappy, and trying to deal with just being able to get out of bed each day. Something had to give, and so I decided it had to be WORRY.
I decided just to “let go.” I decided to look after me and put me first. And I decided that at the end of the day the world would not fall apart if I didn’t
____________ (fill in the blank) what ever. And since then life has been a heck of a lot easier. My favourite saying in time (thanks to Doris Day) has been, “Que sera sera (what ever will be will be.) Sing along if you want….
So, if you are worrying about a big deal of little things, let it go. If your worrying about things you can change, then take action. Anyway, that is enough of a discussion about worrying, I don’t want to worry you that you worry too much now do I?
